Escolta is where the British handed over Manila to the Spaniards after Britains 20-month consummation of the city. Escolta became one of the major commercial business districts of the Spaniards. Since Escolta was the shopping metropolis during the Spanish colonial period, not only the wealthy Filipinos went here to buy stuffs but also the sophisticated Spaniards. During the American colonial period, Escolta became more progressive; the structures were reconstructed. Also, the buildings were added to Escolta and along with the other buildings came the Manila tranvia. Escolta became a banking and financial community from being just a commercial thoroughfare. Foreign embassies, financial institutions, insurance companies were made. Undeniably, Escolta was the place to be during Spanish and American colonial period; it was a very hard place for the Spaniards and the Americans.
